The Winds Lyrics by Irina Putyajeva “Any tree that does not bear fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire” We all have got the winds that blow, No matter how they rage and rampage, The living branches are for pipes, The dry ones are for making fire. Oh, proud woods, you ought to know That holding out is most important: The higher are the tops, the sweeter The voices of the singing twigs. We all have got the winds that blow. Part 1 Like lightning, the terrible news shuddered Athens. Greece never Had seen such a horrible, vicious and ruthless disaster… The young man was cast from Acropolis for his endeavor To measure with talent of Daedalus, glorious master. Now Thalos, entirely breathless, lay smashed on the ground, The name of the killer, the brute, was the talk of the town … A partridge, the soul of the victim, was flying about To show: God Almighty had blessed the ingenious talent. The killer, cold-blooded, just buried the body with care And coming back home fell asleep, undisturbed, as if faultless, And only his name flew away late at night god knows where Along with the darkness, the sin of his loyal accomplice. Daedalus! - the ringing voice of a child resounds with an echo (The curtain falls) Scene 1 Daedalus’s workshop. Artistic confusion caused by his works, paintings and inventions. Enter Daedalus singing his song. 2. Aria of Daedalus I got up early in the morning, The break of day was bright and cool. About the garden I was roaming, And I designed a folding stool. I found an ingenious method, It is unique, and can’t be wrong. For theatre lovers I have made it: They won’t watch standing hours long. I overrule the nature secrets, So may the strings poeticize. May life be good as natural sequence, Let people think it to be nice. Enter Icarus, running. Icarus - Father! How could you?! Why have you killed my brother? Daedalus - Nonsense! Who told you that? Icarus - The crowd. I was saved by a miracle. They want to kill you. Let’s run away, father! The crowd forces its way through the door. Daedalus and Icarus jump out into the window. The door falls down Athenians break into the room lead by Nobody. 3. Nobody’s Aria Nobody: Filicide Daedalus, seal of shame and disgrace, Themis’s judgement he is sure to face. As requital, he’ll pay (eye for eye) The hangman is waiting for people to die Athenians: Sacrifices, sacrifices Olympus demands. Bread and blood, bread and blood That’s all the crowd wants. Nobody: Hold them! Where are they? Oh! They’ve slipped away through the window! They can’t be far off! The crowd runs away shouting: “Death to the killers! Scene 2 The cellar in a shop. Icarus and Baksia hug warmly saying good-bye. Enter Daedelus and Cent. The lovers pretend to be antique statues. The duet of Daedelus and Cent. 4. The Aria of Daedalus and Cent Daedalus: We’ll fly into the dark of night Just let me find a horse Now for a day or two, please, hide Me in your dear house. For you and I, my dear Cent, Are now as good as kin, So now when I’m in need, my friend, Please help me, don’t be mean. Cent: Well, Daedalus, don’t doubt me, I risk my life and all. Relationship like this, you see, Is not approved at all. But helping out a friend in need Is honourable cause If you don’t mind, I’ll make a bid, And you can stay of course. Daedalus: I will not dicker over it Tell me your price, my friend, I think that can live on it, The price of your good turn. Cent: In gold, I will not ask you, To pay for your good will Just put in pledge for all I do Your talent and your skill. Daedalus: Agreed! I think it will be fair I‘ll reckon all I do: Whatever I’ll invent we’ll share, Dividing all in two. They strike a bargain and leave Icarus and Baksia revive. Icarus sings a romance for his lover. 5. Icarus’s Rromance Oh Glory to the skies! I’d like to thank you, skies, For the amazing grace of love you’ve given, For the delight of beauty’s triumph it redeems. I drown in her eyes, When hearing her I fall into oblivion My head is in the clouds of fascinating dreams. The shadow of delight Has come into this world from daydream vision It is like vivifying gulp of water and Has filled the day with light The night of bliss - with wonderful volition And last, to crown it all, it filled the clock with sand. Oh, Glory to the skies! Amantes and Amentes are engaged in the act of love. Scene 3. The interior of a shop. Baksia sings a song performing a belly dance. 6. The Nightingale and the Rose Music by Rimsky-Korsakov The Nightingale, performs his song, For his beloved Rose all day long. She listens to His song in silence. Sometime a singer sings like that At wedding party for the bride. The charming girl is not aware If it is right or, maybe, wrong, So mournful is the singer’s song... Enter Nobody. To find out where Daedalus and Ikarus hide, he sings a flattering song for Baksiya. Enter Nobody. He sings a flattering song for Baksia, wishing to find out where Daedalus and Icarus are hiding. 7. Nobody’s Aria Nobody: To many countries I have been, I’ve seen the world, it seems, But I have never given in To winds in raging seas. I’ve seen a lot of magic groves And many wonders, too; But I have never come across А charming girl like you. Beautiful and fair, Happy gift of Venus You’re beyond compare In this world of meanness. Some years ago, as a reward, To clank of shields and swords A magic diamond I got. By will of Zeus, my God. Illuminating roads at night It makes expanses blue, But only you can really light Its rays that shine for you... Beautiful and fair, Happy gift of Venus, You’re beyond compare In this world of meanness. Now, goddess, I will tell you so: I’d give it to you, please, If you could only let me know Where Daedalus now is. Beautiful and fair, Happy gift of Venus, You’re beyond compare In this world of meanness. Baksia: Beautiful and fair, Happy gift of Venus, I’m beyond compare In this world of meanness. Baksia exchanges the key for the “diamond”. Nobody runs into the room followed by Cent who runs in to the loud sound of broken glass 8. Trio of Cent, Baksia and Nobody Cent: Now, why the hell, my dear friend, You’ve given him the key? Baksia: I got this diamond instead With blue-eyed ray, you see? Cent: Yes, silly girl, I understand And see with naked eyes: You’ve got a necklace in your hand With threaded fireflies. Nobody: They’ve managed to escape, alas, And though they’ve slipped away They can’t be gone too far from us, I’ll catch them anyway. Scene 4 The harbour in Vedents. Sadko’s ships prepare for the voyage. 9. The Song of the Sailors (Sadko’s crew) Music by N. Rimsky-Korsakov Lyrics by A. Koltsov Sailors (choir): Now across the sea, blue and boundless, A squadron of ships will go on a voyage, Yes, a squadron of great ships, and another one, Sadko’s leading ship, most renowned guest. All the ships are embellished admirably With the cherished one being most beautiful. Sitting there on board the exemplary ship Is the young Nightingale Budimirovich. Sick and tired is he of his youthful wife, Of his lawful wife, blessed by minister, Having bidden goodbye to his charming spouse He set out in search of another bride. Height, oh height, height, oh height, height celestial Depth of sea, depth of sea, depth of ocean and sea, Vast and wide is expanse all around the world, Oh, so deep are the whirlpools of Dnepr stream. Height, oh height, height, oh height, height celestial Depth of sea, depth of sea, depth of ocean an’ sea, Vast and wide is expanse all around the world Oh, so deep are the whirlpools of Dnepr stream Height, oh h a-a-eight… Depth, oh de-e-e-epth… Height, oh height, height, oh, h a-a-eight… Depth of sea, depth of sea-e-e-e… Vast and wide is expanse all around the world… Oh, so deep are the whirlpools of Dnepr stream. But the sea of blue is deeper still. Scene 5 The ships are in the open sea. The aliens have been detected; in the heat of the dispute the pirates attack Sadko’s fleet. They seize the ships, look for gold and find it. 10. The Song of the Pirates Gold, gold, gold – loaded bag of gold, Gold has bewitched all in this crazy world! They took hold of the young ones, Captured them and detained them, Locked them in chains, and jailed them - Prison cram untold. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Gold, gold, gold, it’s a real gin! Keep your ears open, all those young and green. For this contemptible metal, Gold, oh so wretched, so hateful Many a man got mental, Perished and kicked in. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Gold, gold, gold – all over the world, Young and green ones go feverish at the sight of gold. If you see something gold plated, Don’t get too fascinated And don’t try to get it You don’t need that gold. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Hey, comrades, dear pirates, hey, pirates, hey, pirates, A man can die but once! So, please, don’t kill and murder, don’t murder, don’t murder, Don’t murder, never once. Suddenly, the “Monica” aircraft-carrier shows up in the horizon. 11. The Anthem of the Sailors (Puccini’s Theme from Madam Butterfly opera) Now we are dazzled by beautiful light of the star of inflexible convictions, and we haven’t regret, we are firm, yes, we are. No reproaches, no restrictions. The pirates are arrested. Captain Ton tells the sailors to find weapons of mass destruction. They look for it but only find Daedalus and Icarus tied up together. Captain Ton: Who accuses them? Pirates: Nobody does. Captain Ton: Nobody? OK. The sailors take the cold. Suddenly, a ghost ship shows up in the sky. The theme of Wagner’s “Flying Dutchman” begins to play. 12. The Choir of the Ghosts Music by R.Wagner Lyrics by V. Lebdev-Kumach Ghosts: Ho! Hey! Hey! Ha! Hussa hey! Hallo hey! Shall we ram it, Captain? Captain Holland: We’re gonna ram it! Ghosts: Hussa hey! We’re gonna ram it, Captain! Once the captain of a ship Voyaged the ocean, oh so deep, He has drowned fifteen times Risked his lives among the sharks Hey ho, cheer up! Full speed ahead! Sail down the wind! Hussa! Cheer up, captain! Hussa! We’re gonna ram it! Give a smile, Captain, pull oneself together, We’re gonna ram it! Ha! Ha !Ha! Once the Captain, the brave man, Made a voyage to distant land And he fell in love like a green young man He would frown, and grow thin But no one would sing: “Captain, smile, captain, smile, captain smile, Sir”… The ghost ship rams the aircraft carrier. Both ships drown. Why on earth will win in this eternal fight between the good and the evil? The ghost ship emerges from the water. It is immortal. There is NOBODY on captain's bridge PART 2 Scene 6 Nobody cloisters Daedalus and Icarus in a big tower on the Isle of Crete. The Tsar of Crete Minosif Vissarion does not execute them but sees to it that they should not be set free until Daedalus invents an antigravity device. .Icarus is deeply upset. 13. Rough Sketch Lyrics by Yury Galetsky Please, draw my sketch for me, my little boy, Deceptive masks of this November day, No one will get us right and bring us joy Nothing will make us change our way. Sail little ship, sail down the wind, and fly Fly on, my leaf, my breath, don’t lag behind. Though in the arms of love I am to die Its melody is all I bear in mind. Go round, like life, and drop a line in flight, And let the frozen words fly on and on I’ve laughed enough, and, by the fire side, I’ll know when rustling leaves will turn me on. Daedalus has made some queer dolls for the royalty, while Icarus has been pondering over the sense of life. 14. Ashes Lyrics by Gavriil Derzhavin (in memory of Duke Meshersky) Death: nothing but tremor and dread, And pride and need make up our essence We live with God, and then we’re dead… Where will you be tomorrow, man? The clock has struck your latest hours, And, like your dream, your life is gone. At the request of Tsarina Pacifai Daedalus has designed a machine for copulation with the White Bull (that is how the Minotaur came into existence – а monster who was half man and half bull, to whom young Athenian men and women were sacrificed in the Cretan labyrinth until Theseus killed him). Icarus is tormented by thoughts about death. 15. The Only Way Lyrics by Gleb Gorbovsky My eyes in the azure of heaven I’m bathing, The scraps of my love off my bosom I’m scraping, The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart. But still I am fond of the road and the river, The shadow of olive-tree gives me a shiver The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart. By all sorts of thoughts at night I am worried My heart get along with the world which is varied. The songs I can hear are breaking my heart But now I am certain which way to depart. Wishing to hide the Minotaur Minosif told Daedalus to build a Labyrinth Palace. Icarus is deeply upset. 16. Ash Wednesday Lyrics by T. S. Eliot Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope to know again Because I know that time is always time And place is always one and only place Because I do not hope to turn again Because I do not hope Because I do not hope to turn … 17. Icarus’s Prayer. I’m a sinner through and through Dirt and darkness is my world Lies and lechery reign too, All is like a prison ward. Madonna Litta, Santa Maria, Pray and ask from above, Blissful and blessed is your holy prayer, Heavenly prayer for love. Up in heaven all is light, Up in heaven there’re no sins, There’s no evil, there’s no night, How I wish that I had wings… Feeling that he is about to die Icarus makes up his will. 18. Icarus’s Will Lyrics by Yury Galetsky My friend, I will not die, My soul will still be playing And sounding, as before: I will transform and be transformed as ever. A picture drawn on sand, a little ship, his vessel: The child is running towards wonder To touch it tenderly and softly And name it in his childish way, and smile, contented. My life is like a little rhyme With secret of the candle light and The light of quite a different life Of love’s unknown distant echo. Scene 7 One day Minosif told Daedalus to set the poems he had written in his youth to music. Daedalus and Icarus sing the tune. 19. Light in the Dark Lyrics by Josef Jugashvili (Stalin) Light in the dark, spread out, You are like heavenly conscience, Light will disperse all the clouds: God’s will has powerful forces. Covered with darkness, the meadow Waits for your smile on the hour, Will you come down from heaven? God’s will has almighty power. There’s nothing really like it: Light that inspires in darkness, May you, my dear, be lightened? May you shine on and be lustrous... Opening my heart and lightened, Nailed to the cross, and spread over I will be filled with light, and Wake with wings to hover. Filled with light, Minosif leaves crying bitterly (Peccare licet nemini!) Waking with wings to hover – Daedalus repeats. The Wings Publius Ovidius Naso Metamorphoses: Book The Eighth Translated from the Latin by John Dryden Then to new arts his cunning thought applies, And to improve the work of Nature tries. A row of quills in gradual order placed, Rise by degrees in length from first to last; As on a cliff the ascending thicket grows, Or, different reeds the rural pipe compose. Along the middle runs a twine of flax, The bottom stems are joint by pliant wax. Thus, well compact, a hollow bending brings The fine composure into real wings. His boy, young Icarus, that near him stood, Unthinking of his fate, with smiles pursued The floating feathers, which the moving air Bore loosely from the ground, and wasted here and there. Or with the wax impertinently played, And with his childish tricks the great design delayed. The final master-stroke at last imposed, And now, the neat machine completely closed; Then teaching, with a fond concern, his son, He took the untried wings, and fixed them on; But fix'd with trembling hands; and as he speaks, The tears roul gently down his aged cheeks. Then kissed, and in his arms embraced him fast, But knew not this embrace must be the last. PART 3. Scene 8 Daedalus and Icarus in Flight 20. Duet of Daedalus and Icarus Lyrics by Valery Bryusov Daedalus: Take care, my son! You can’t be sure! Don’t strain your wings with all your might, The windy way is not secure, Try to avoid the fogs in flight. Icarus: You’ve freed my heart, oh, father, dear, You have undone my body’s ties. Why are we slow? Fly up! We’re near The everlasting world of stars! Daedalus: We’ve run away from prison horrors, But our port is far, you know... We’ve got the ruffled foam below us, Above us curling clouds flow. Icarus: Do we need clouds and seas? Oh Nonsense! The will of birds is our lot: Take off and fly in vast expanses Across the endless starlit vault. Daedalus: Now follow me, my sonny, dear, Believe my keen and sober mind I am the one, as it appears, Who knows the way to stars that shine. Icarus: The ways! Whoever needs them, dear?! You’d better sate your mirth for once! Gods let us reach the upper sphere, We will not have another chance. Daedalus: My son, I fastened to your shoulders The nimble feathers, didn’t I ? Once, twice, three times, across all borders, To outer space now we can fly. Icarus: I can’t restrain myself! I drown! I’m deaf and dumb, can’t hear and see! My flesh is up, my soul is down The sun is Erebus to me. Daedalus: Now take the happy mean, my dear, Between the Earth and Heaven One… It’s in the golden abyss sphere, Beyond the flock of cranes, my son! Valery Bryusov Young man! To spite the earthly living You dared fly up to the sun You had your wings burnt up and melted You saw the sea of blue and fainted And tumbled down , reckless man. 21. The Lamentations of an Icarus Lyrics by Charles Baudelaire The friends of fallen girls, I swear, About happy life can boast, While all I have is just a ghost And wring my hands in deep despair I vainly hoped to find the end and The centre of the universe; In broken wing, to my distress Alas, my happy journey ended The graceful space was past compare With dazzling light of twinkling stars The light of sun is all my eyes Can memorize now, as it were. I burnt my wings for love of beauty, And wouldn’t like to give my name To yawning abyss which became My burial place and final duty. Oh voto tremendo! Spettacolo orrendo! Gi? regna la morte, D'abisso le porte Spalanca crudel. 22. The Flight of the Soul Lyrics by Tatyana Andronova One’s soul is meant for flying up above Over the trees and houses stretching orderly, For cherishing the simple words of love And saying prayers softly and inaudibly. For looking mildly into people’s eyes And saying that hostility is useless, That there is light so clear and so lucid, And life is fine when light surrounds us. Life gives us wings that lift us up to heaven Enabling us to fly over routine and hover, praying. The soul of Icarus meets Archangel Gabriel, surrounded by angels. The angels sing an acathistus to Saint Gabriel. 23. The Akathist Hymn to Archangel Gabriel Angels: Archangel Gabriel The chosen Archangel, always at the head of the throne of God The guardian of God, and herald of joy, the honourable Gabriel The glorifier of the Immaculate Virgin We offer up songs of praise devoutly Calling up to him with gratitude Rejoice; proclaim His power with your name Rejoice; show the indescribable glory of God with your marvellous beauty Rejoice, the immaterial soul, free from the bonds of the body Rejoice, indescribable secret treasure Archangel Gabriel Seeing you, a radiant star, beautified equitable and wise in heaven Created before the coming of heaven and earth, the Archangel, We call with you to the Creator: Hallelujah Dominical glories to the contemplator Rejoice, divine fire who warms us heartily Rejoice, reflecting this heat of passions, beautified with amazing humility Rejoice, wandering in darkness, the inspiration of sudden Revelation Rejoice, radiant and starlit, dispersing the darkness Archangel Gabriel Fyodor Tutchev It’s not the flesh, it’s spirit that is mortified The soul is in despair, fear and tremble, It strives for light from darkness of the night, And once enlightened, it will grunt and rebel. Dried up and burnt by doubt, lack of faith It bears the unbearable, for sure, And realising its inevitable death It longs for faith but it will not adjure. Through the soul of Icarus, Archangel Gabriel sends all those living a revelation. 24. The Time Will Come Lyrics by Yury Galetsky Gabriel: The time will come and you will see The abyss opening up before your eyes The good old clock will stop The peal will fade away. God will remain, along with pain, and you’ll be feeling two-foot small. The time will come with fire in your blood The juice will gush, like water, from the tree, And you will think the torment of your love To be tranquil, and motionless, and free. The dancing soul is oh so bright and shiny Like word of triumph, first and last, Like children’s eyes delighted and amazed Like love oh so affectionate and young. The time will come… Among the dancing angels, humble man, Will see yourself submitting to mysterious wonders as one of many lines of God Almighty. The Epilogue Gabriel, Icarus’s soul and angels sings together Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who doesn’t follow the council of the wicked ones, Who doesn’t tread the path of scoffers And keeps away from spiteful scamps. The law of God is what he follows And meditating day and night In God’s prescript his will he honours And does what he believes is right. He’s like a tree by streams of water, Its fruit in due course it will yield Its wholesome leaves will never wither And all he does he will succeed. The wicked are incongruous creatures Like ashes, they’ll be blown away. The sinful men amid the righteous Will not be saved on Judgment Day. God knows the way of righteous people, The way of scamps will fade away But we are standing in the middle Waiting Last Day 25. Philippe Desportes He ran the risk of plunging by intent Into the abyss winning fame and glory, It is a sad and venerable story: He showed his worth and triumphed in the end. Jacopo Sannadzaro Regretful is the end but it repays The downfall has lead to joy and of happiness Blessed is the one who perished in the darkness He will be glorified in songs of praise. (In saecula saeculorum) 26. The Eternity (The Final Chorus) Lyrics by Tatyana Andronova Should you happen to be far away from your home, all alone At the start of the seas, or, perchance, in some vast distant plains You will yearn for perpetual living, so sad and forlorn, And your soul will ascend up to heaven, allaying its pains. We are living under the sun In the currents of wind, everlasting, Through the circle of ages we run Always waiting for beams of lighting. Looking into the space through the haze of the last border line As we picture the same broken line of the worlds once again We should fill our souls, for a second, at least, with sun light Praising love one more time lest this humdrum of life be in vain. In this great everlasting world We’ll remember the endless evil and good. 27. Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who doesn’t follow the council of the wicked ones, Who doesn’t tread the path of scoffers And keeps away from spiteful scamps. God knows the way of righteous people, The way of scamps will fade away So we are standing on the crossroads Awaiting Judgement Day 28. Sublimity Lyrics by Svetlana Kim Sublimity does not need words and seems To live in perfect graceful silence. It generates reality from dreams, Concealing godlike images inside us. Likewise, the beam of light will never fade In splinters of a mirror strewn about; It will evolve a diamond parade On leaves of dewy grass at morning round. We cannot see sublimity at all, Nor can we measure it, no weigh, nor taste, nor touch it. We only can accept it, heart and soul, It’s immaterial, and we can only trust it. It’s only music, God amidst almighty gods, That can, in chime with Universe, resound To save us and deliver our souls From earthly fetters like from prison bound. Sublimity does not need useless words… The End
